What would you say about an employee who gets the “Best Employee” award every month? It is not easy to live up to the standards that person sets in the workplace. That’s why you’ll thank God for not putting you in the same office as Meeka.
As one of the three employees at Accuride International Inc.’s southeastern sales center, Meeka has surpassed all expectations. To be more honest, we never did expect a dog to run an office so efficiently. Her dad, Michael Reeg, is also her boss. That makes it two employees. The third one is Kya, another family dog. So much for diversity!
Michael began working from home for the drawer slide manufacturing company last year, as their District Sales Manager. The transition would have gotten the better of him if he did not have his pets to give him company. “Transitioning to a home-based position was quite a change,” said Reeg. “It’s quiet here. You need to get yourself fired up and excited about the day. Having a faithful companion in the office certainly helps.”
Obviously, Meeka does not undertake jobs her human performs, but she contributes in her own unique ways. Michael adds, “There are times that I’ll even talk to her as I work through a problem or map out a customer solution. I try out my sales pitches and presentations on her. She’s not easily impressed or swayed. All she hears is ‘blah, blah, blah, Meeka’ — but she likes to hear my voice and I love that she pays attention. Having her in my office all day is something that we both look forward to.”
Such dedication, much wow!
On the other hand, Kya is not that sold to the job. As Michael puts it, “She is really my wife’s dog. So she only comes up to the office when my wife is gone. We are her second choice for company!” But Meeka’s commitment towards her job is at another level. Even when Michael is out for work, she shows up at her workplace.
“If my office door happens to be shut she will spend the day laying in front of the door, just in case I’m really in there,” Michael says. “In my opinion, that earned her the title of Employee of the Quarter.”
Madison, Micheal’s daughter, shared her thoughts too. “I was not surprised at all when my dad first showed me the framed picture of Meeka as Employee of the Quarter because Meeka is very loyal to my dad and his (their) work. I just thought it was hilarious.”
Meeka’s first award was back in 2016, and she has never lost her form since.
Reeg’s colleagues were all praises for Meeka and her quality performances one quarter after another. “He sends an update after every quarter. Meeka is an outstanding support to Michael and his work,” said a spokesperson for Accuride International Inc. “Dogs are the best.”
However, Michael stays wary of the fact that Meeka might begin taking her accolades for granted. “I haven’t decided yet if the prestige is going to her head, or if Kya feels disgruntled,” he says. “Maybe a change is needed for one quarter, so that Meeka doesn’t feel entitled. I want her to stay sharp.”
