Have you ever seen a wild wolf up close? If you have, you must have been struck by its magnificent size and dominant character. Wolves are close cousins of your pet dog. Yet the latter seldom inhibits the characteristics that define the former. For example, the ears. While wolves have straight, upright ears, dogs have low drooping ones. What caused it? Why do dogs have floppy ears? Sounds too complicated, doesn’t it? In reality, it is easy to understand.
Just like you want to know what made dogs so different from wolves, Charles Darwin, yes the man himself, found himself wondering the same. We all know how adamant he was to solve the mysteries of life. But before he could come to a conclusion, another scientist decrypted the secret behind floppy dog ears. That too in the same year that Darwin published his book, “The Variation of Animals and Plants Under Domestication,” on January 30th, 1968. A mere 150 years ago.
