Basenjis are quirky, intelligent and famously self-reliant — they don’t bark (they ‘baroo’ or yodel), keep themselves immaculately clean like a cat, and have a strong prey drive and a talent for escape. They need daily exercise and patient, creative training; they’re not eager-to-please and recall is unreliable. Affectionate on their own terms, they suit an experienced owner who appreciates an independent, mischievous character.
