Dog Rescued From Animal Shelter Becomes Real Life Narco!

  • Last updated February 5, 2018

Not much in life better than a good redemption story. Especially when it involves a rescued doggo and history being made. Meet Kano, a one-year-old from Kansas, who has become the first pit bull in Kansas to join the police’s K-9 unit.

Kano weighs in at 55lbs and named after a Mortal Kombat character and was saved from possibly being put down and placed in the “Universal K-9” programme. This is a programme which rescues dogs from shelters and trains them up for work in the police force.

Despite the unfair reputation a lot of pit bulls have, Universal K-9’s operating director states that Kano is no tough guy:

“[Pit Bulls] are no good at taking people down,” Croft said. “But I will tell you what they are damn good at: [drug] detection.”

Universal K-9’s mission is to rescue underloved dogs (usually aged between 1-3 years old) from shelters and give them a second chance at life by training them for work in the police force. In Kano’s case, this wasn’t just a solo effort. Animal Farm Foundation helped out to pay the heft training fee as part of their mission to seek fairer treatment and opportunities for pit bulls. The course cost over $8000 in total. Check out Kano at work in this video:

Pitbulls have a fantastic sense of smell that makes them adept at being drug detection dogs. So Kano has trained to find marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. And he’s almost paid for himself! Last month he helped find $7500 worth of marijuana! What a guy!

Best of luck Kano! We’re rooting for you.
