The Chessie is the most rugged and strong-willed of the retrievers, bred to break ice on the Chesapeake Bay. It needs plenty of exercise (especially swimming) and confident, consistent training — it’s smart but more independent and reserved with strangers than a Lab or Golden. The oily coat is low-maintenance but has a distinct scent when wet. Devoted and protective, it suits an experienced, active owner.
